Catalonia and the Basque Country join European alliance for semiconductors.

The Generalitat de Catalunya’s Consejería de Empresa y Trabajo, through its agency Acció, has joined forces with 12 other European regions to establish the Alliance of European Semiconductor Regions. The aim of the alliance is to promote growth and competitiveness in the European semiconductor industry through the exchange of knowledge and best practices, as well as cooperation among the participating regions.

In addition to Catalonia, the participating regions include the Basque Country (Spain), Bavaria, Saxony (Germany), Carinthia, Styria (Austria), Flanders (Belgium), Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (France), Piedmont (Italy), North Brabant, Overijssel (Netherlands), Aveiro-Central Region (Portugal), and Moravia (Czech Republic).

The alliance will focus on research and innovation for the development of new technologies and applications in the chip sector, with the goal of promoting technology transfer and training centers in these areas. Additionally, work will be done to establish the foundations of governance and to position the participating regions in the semiconductor industry.

This initiative comes at a time when the global semiconductor industry is facing unprecedented challenges, including supply chain disruptions and an increasing demand for chips due to the rise of emerging technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence. By collaborating with other European regions, the Alliance of European Semiconductor Regions hopes to build a more resilient and competitive semiconductor industry that can meet these challenges and continue to drive innovation in Europe and beyond.
